In October it will be my 1st anniversary as a Marriage Celebrant

In a few days time it will be 12 months since I was approved as an Authorised Marriage Celebrant in Australia.

So I thought I’d take stock of the past 12 months.

Before I was successful in my application to become a Marriage Celebrant it was quite a nervous wait.  It took several months from the time I had completed my Cert IV in Celebrancy to when the Attorney General’s department notified me that I was authorised to marry people.

That’s when the hard work began – now I had to go about actually marrying people.  Would couples want to be married by me? Could I actually design and deliver wedding ceremonies that couples would be happy with?  How would people find out about my services? So many questions…

It took a couple of months to get my website finalised, that was an interesting process because as well as being a Marriage Celebrant I also design websites for small businesses.  Now I was a client for myself, very interesting experience.

In December and early January I started getting some requests for information about my services, I was stoked.  Then I had my very first client interview, now I was putting myself out there.  Although I was a little nervous to begin with that first interview, it sparked something within me.  I realised I do have something to offer couples that are looking to get married. I understand the requirements for marrying couples and I can listen to their needs for their ceremony, I was actually going to be good at marrying people.

I enjoy preparing couple’s wedding ceremonies, it gives me great joy writing how the couple’s met and their wishes for the future as a married couple.  Then there’s the scary part of actually delivering the ceremony.  I say scary because I want to make it just perfect for the couple.  But all my years of experience in delivering presentations and training small to large groups kicks in, and to date all of the weddings I’ve conducted have been very enjoyable to deliver and to be part of.  From the very small wedding party (three guests) to the large weddings I’ve enjoyed them all and I still get a great deal of satisfaction when I get to announce the couple as now being married.

So what’s coming up in the near future?

I’ve already got several weddings booked for next year, which is fantastic.

On a political note, I truly hope that the injustice of same sex couples is rectified. I’d love to marry couples regardless of their gender.
